The hardiest Tetras that I've ever had!
- I can't believe the hardiness of these fish compared to their more beautiful and more delicate relatives -- the Neon Tetras. I already have 4 in my 15-gallon tank and they school well with the Lemon Tetras and the Red Eye Tetras. If I will be asked to choose which one to keep, Neon or Black Neon; I would say Black Neon, all day! Hands down.

3 gallon minimum
- No fish esp schooling fish should be kept in anything as small as a 3 gallon. The school and the larger the better, should be thought of as ONE. In nature these schools run in the hundreds, even thousands! Do you think a minimum of 5 or six is really natural to their genetics/instincts (no). When one keeps them in larger set ups, with appropriate low light plantings so on, they come alive and behave completely different then when in smaller - five to six minimum "school" set ups. The water chemistry is easier (esp for beginners) to maintain with at least a 20. These fish need room to swim (I kept mine in a 75 where they bred). Even if one does small weekly partials (as one would in such a small set up) this alone is a stressor. Fish btw kept in small sizes release stress/territorial hormones - it is not good for them (like people crammed in an elevator). Background - biochemistry, pre vet/ocean studies, 50 + yrs fish breeding/keeping

I've had them
- Really easy to keep - I would recommend them to anyone wanting to start a tropical aquarium. They like to live in groups of at least 5.

Other breeding info
- When the female is in the breeding tank you must have a dark place for her to hide while pregnancy is occuring.
