oxygen

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Oxygen is a gas present in the air that is crucial to life. Through gas exchange at the water surface, oxygen becomes dissolved in the water. The warmer the water, the less oxygen dissolves in it. Overcrowding can also lead to oxygen deficiency in a tank. Means of increasing the oxygen content in water include aeration, lowering the water temperature, and removal of waste products that use oxygen.
