net gallons

By Shirlie Sharpe, About.com

Definition: Net gallons is the actual volume of water in an aquarium. This number will be lower than the rated capacity of the tank, as the substrate and decorations displace some water and reduce the total volume it can hold. Net gallons should be used when calculating medications and other water additives, and when determining the stocking level of the tank.
