By Shirlie Sharpe, About.com

Definition: Mouth Fungus is a disorder that produces a fungus like growth on the mouth. It is actually caused by the bacterium Flexibacter columnaris, commonly referred to as Columnaris.

It shows up first as a gray or white line around the lips and later as short tufts sprouting from the mouth giving the appearance of fungus. The disease is highly contagious and may be spread through contaminated nets, specimen containers, and even food.
