ion

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Ion are electrically charged particles present in the water. Salts dissolved in water decompose into ions, that is, into particles with a positive or a negative electrical charge. The amount of ions dissolved in the water determines its total salt content, which is expressed as the electrical conductance. Organic waste products can also be present as ions, such as: ammonium ions, nitrite ions, and nitrate ions.
