barbel

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Barbels are slender whisker like appendages near the mouths of certain fish, notably members of the carp and catfish families, that have a sensory function. They may also be referred to as barbs. Fish having barbels should be provided with smooth substrate, as substrates with rough edges can damage the tender barbels.
