barbel

By Shirlie Sharpe, About.com

Definition: Barbel are slender whisker like appendages near the mouths of certain fish, notably members of the carp and catfish families, that have a sensory function. May also be called barbs. Fish having barbels should be provided with smooth substrate, as substrates with rough edges can damage the barbel.
