alkaline earth

By Shirlie Sharpe, About.com

Definition: Alkaline earth, also called earth salts, are metals that react readily with water (especially when heated), and act as powerful reducing agents. Subsoil water may contain varying quantities of such alkaline earth salts, usually in the form of calcium and magnesium salts. Water high in alkaline earth salts may be excessively hard, and therefore require treatment to be suitable for aquarium fish.
