Definition: Acrylic is a plastic material used to construct fish tanks, filters and accessories. Also known as Plexiglas, it is clear and colorless, and is transparent to visible and ultraviolet light.

Acrylic is much lighter weight than glass, but is more easily scratched than glass. Because it is a thermoplastic, it can be shaped while hot to a variety of shapes, such as the popular bowfont style aquarium.
