acidosis

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Acidosis is the condition in which the water pH is very low (below 5.5), causing excess mucous, inflammation of the skin, and erosion of the gills in aquarium fish. Affected fish dart about the tank and will often jump out of the water. Respiration increases, and the fish may be observed at the surface of the water gasping for air.
