acclimate

By Shirlie Sharpe, About.com

Definition: Acclimate is the process of adjusting a fish to new conditions. Acclimating a fish is important to avoid stress that can result from sudden changes in the environment. If fish are not acclimated they may be more susceptible to disease, or in extreme cases, die from shock. The most critical factors when acclimating fish are water temperature and pH.

When moving a fish from one aquarium to another the fish is acclimated by being placed in a bag with water from the original aquarium. The sealed bag is floated in the new aquarium for ten minutes. A cup of water from the new aquarium is placed in the bag and it is floated for another ten minutes. The fish is then released into the new aquarium.
