Acara

Definition: Acara is the generic name frequently used to refer to a number of species of large South American cichlids. A few of the commonly seen cichlids termed Acara, are Aequidens pulcher (Blue Acara), Aequidens portalegrensis (Black, Red, or Port Acara), and Nannacara anomala (Golden Acara). Acara has been a very popular catchall name, and quite a few cichlids have been referred to as Acara at one time or another.
