Definition: Abramites are members of the South American characin family, Anostomidae. Members of the Anostomidae family are often called Headstanders due to the head down posture they exhibit when swimming. Abramites are best kept in habitats with artificial plants, as they are voracious herbivores that will quickly strip a tank of any live vegetation. Although peaceful around other species, they are intolerant of members of their own species.
Species of Abramites include: Abramites egnes, Abramites hypselonotus hypselonotus, Abramites hypselonotus ternetzi, and Abramites solarii. Abramites hypselonotus is the species most often seen in the aquarium trade, and is sold under the common names of High-backed, Marbled, or Striped Headstander.
