Aquarium Fish Profiles

Barbs, Danios and Goldfish comprise a large part of the Cyprinididae family, which is the largest of the fresthwater fish families. Some of them include:   Bala Shark, Black Ruby Barb, Gold Barb, Goldfish, Harlequin, Pearl Danio, Rosy Barb, Tiger Barb, Tinfoil  Barb, White Cloud Mountain Minnow, Zebra Danio

These fish are considered Labyrinth fish, meaning they have a special organ that allows them to breath air directly. Some of these species include:  Betta, Blue/Three Spot Gourami, Dwarf Gourami, Honey Gourami, Kissing Gourami, Moonlight Gourami, Opaline Gourami, Pearl Gourami, Powder Blue Gourami, and Red/Sunset Gourami.

Catfish are one of the largest and most diverse families of fish. One unusual characteristic of this family is the Weber's apparatus, which connects the hearing and swim bladder organs, providing them with an exceptionally keen sense of hearing. Some species in this family include:   Adolfos Cory, Bandit Cory, Blackfin Cory, Bronze Cory, Giant Whiptail, Glass Catfish,  Hog-Nosed Brochis, Jordan's Catfish, Otocinclus, Pictus Catfish, Redtail Catfish, Royal Pleco, and Upside Down Catfish.

Believe it or not, there is only one primary species of Angelfish sold in the aquarium trade. However, there are many interesting and beautiful color variations. This gallery contains a number of them.

Cichilds are an extremely popular family, and incldue a wide variety of species, some of which are:   Bolivan Ram, Firemouth, Kribensis,  Lemon Cichlid, Livingstoni,  Midas Cichlid, Severum, Texas Cichlid, Zebra Cichlid

This branch of the Characin family is very popular. Some of the species in this group incldue:   Black Banded Leporinus, Common Hatchetfish, Marbled Hatchetfish,  Pacu, Red Hook, Red Bellied Piranha, Silver Dollar, and Striped Pike Characin

Tetras are popular small fish, most of which are schooling fish that are suitable for community aquariums. Some of them are:   Black Neon Tetra, Black Phantom Tetra,  Black Widow Tetra, Bleeding Heart Tetra, Blind Cave Fish, Bloodfin Tetra,  Buenos Aires Tetra, Cardinal Tetra,  Colombian Tetra,  Congo Tetra, Diamond Tetra, Emperor Tetra, Lemon Tetra,  Neon Tetra, Red Eye Tetra, Rummy Nose Tetra, and Yellow Tetra.

Livebearing are colorful peaceful fish that are easy to care for. Some species of livebearers are:   24-carat Gold Molly,  Gold Dust Molly, Guppy, Marigold Swordtail, Marigold Wagtail, Sailfin Molly, Tuxedo Platy, Red Wagtail Platy

Loaches are lively bottom dwelling fish that make a great addition to most community aquariums. Some species include: Clown Loach, Dojo Loach, Weather Loach, Yo Yo Loach

Native to Australia and New Guinea, Rainbowfish have rapidly become popular world-wide.  Their bright colors and dual dorsal fins set them apart from many other freshwater species.  Unfortunately, their attractiveness has caused some species to be captured to the point of near extintion in the wild. As a result some species, such as the highly prized Boseman's Rainbow, are largely captive bred.
