Books About Livebearing Aquarium Fish

By

Livebearing fish have been part of the freshwater aquarium trade for generations. Although hardy and easy to care for, any fish owner can benefit from information about their care and breeding. These books provide a wealth of information for anyone who wishes to keep, or to breed, livebearing aquarium fish. I've listed these books in order of publication date, with the most recent volumes first. Keep in mind that old doesn't always mean out of date. In the aquarium trade, some of the older books set the standard for reference books.

At only 64 pages, this is a small book, but it is packed with good information. Written by livebearer expert Dr. Axelrod, it covers habitat requirements, care and breeding, and includes many excellent photos. Well worth the cover price. Because it is out of print, an original copy may be priced high. Look for used copies that often run a dollar or less.

In addition to stunning photos of a variety of Mollies, this little book covers aquarium setup, care, disease treatment, and breeding. Geared for the beginner, it is a great book to for anyone who wants to start keeping Mollies. One tip, buy a used copy, as it is out of print and new copies are terribly overpriced. You should be able to find a used one for literally a dollar or two, which is well worth the purchase price.

This is a very large reference book with many high quality photos. Makes a great coffee table book, but also has a good deal of practical information about a variety of livebearers. It is pricey, so take the time to look for a good used copy. Not something to invest in if you are only a casual hobbyist, but perfect if you want a reference book that you can also keep out for guests to browse.
