A good freshwater aquarium fish atlas is an invaluable reference for fish owners, from beginner to advanced. A good atlas contains photos, care and feeding information, and detailed profiles for popular species of freshwater fish. These books are listed in order of publication, with the most recently published books first. Although newer books will contain recent taxonomy changes, often older volumes are still among the best reference books. Atlases are generally more expensive than other fish books, so you may want to consider used copies.
Baensch Aquarium Atlas Volume 2
Volume two of the Baencsh Atlas series covers fish not listed in the book one. Cichlids and brackish fish are more heavily covered in this volume. Well worth adding to your library.

Baensch Aquarium Atlas Volume 1
The Baensch atlases are the top of the line. Only four of the five freshwater atlases have been published in English. I recommend purchasing all four, but this is the one to get if you can only afford one. It includes photos, and care and breeding information for most common freshwater fish. Also covered is setup, plant identification and care, as well as disease diagnosis and treatment

Baensch Aquarium Atlas Photo Index
One of the most common problems for beginner and expert alike, is putting their finger on the scenic name of the fish they want to look up. The photo index solves that problem by providing thumbnail photos that list common and scientific names of the fish, as well as the pages where a detailed profile can be found. Fish are grouped by groups, such as catfish, tetras, etc.
