Getting Started - Part 2:
Selecting a Heater

Tip: Don't forget to buy a thermometer when you buy your heater.

Heater
A heater is usually not included in an aquarium "package", but unless you have cold water fish (like goldfish) you'll need one. There are basically two types - immersible (which hang over the side), and fully submersible. The immersible types are cheaper, and can be adjusted without sticking your hand into the water. However they will be damaged if the water level falls too low (or if the heater should drop inside the tank accidentally), and often don't have an actual temperature scale on the heater itself. Fully submersibles cost more, but have a scale on them to set the temperature at, and can be placed anywhere in the tank with suction cups. My personal preference is for fully submersibles, but I have both kinds in my tanks and they work adequately as long as you select a good quality one (heaters are not wise to skimp on. Don't forget to pick up a thermometer when you buy the heater. You can find inexpensive stick on ones that work nicely (you can see one in Figure 2 above). Figure A below shows a immersible, and Figure B shows a fully submersible.

No I haven't forgotten to explain the all in one system. They've been on the market for less than two years, but are selling like hotcakes. Basically what it is, is a lid, light, and filter all rolled into a single unit that sits neatly on top of the tank. Figure C above shows the filtration/biowheel, and Figure D shows the light. The unit is very easy to setup, easy to maintain, and looks great. What is the down side you say? Initial expense is the answer. However if you add the cost of the individual items, it's not as expensive as it might seem. They are very nice for the beginner and experienced hobbyist alike. Take a look at one the next time you visit a pet shop.
