Characins - Part 3 of 9
African Tetras

Although the African Tetras (Alestidae) are one of the smallest segments of the Characin family, in recent years certain species have become more popular. In fact many pet shops carry at least one representative of this family. Among the most commonly seen specimens are the Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) and the Red Eyed Characin (Arnoldichthys spilopterus). Less often seen, but worth looking for are the Long Finned Characin (Brycinus longipinnis), the Adonis Characin (Lepidarchus adonis), and the Sierra Leone Dwarf Characin (Ladigesia roloffi).

Like their American counterparts, the African Tetras sport an adipose fin - the hallmark of the Characin family. They also have acute hearing, and are easily startled by loud noises in the room, or if the glass of their tank is tapped. All are omnivores, and some like the ferocious Wolf Tetra (Hydrocynus goliath) and Tigerfish (Hydrocynus vittatus), are true carnivores.

Generally these tetras prefer soft water, preferably peat filtered. All require well oxygenated water, and are particularly sensitive to nitrates. Regular water changes are critical for their well being. The average lifespan of an African tetra is about five years.
