Question: Where do I Find Info About Rope Fish?
Answer: In answer to the reader question:
I can't find any information on Rope Fish. Do they have another name I should be looking under??"
The best way to search for information is by the scientific name. Unfortunately, it isn't always easy to find the correct scientific name for your fish. But before I get off on a tangent about names, let me answer your question about Rope Fish.
Rope Fish
Although there isn't a huge amount of information available about Rope Fish, you'll probably find more if you search on the scientific name of Erpetoichthys calabaricus. You'll find several links to rope fish information in my Suggested Reading section.
Using Scientific Names
Now back to the issue of using scientific names. Sometimes even expert fishkeepers don't know the scientific name for some of their fish. Needless to say, for beginners it seems rather daunting. Part of problem is due to the fact that the names are Latin and not easy to remember. Furthermore, scientific names can change as the result of discoveries that alter the classification of the fish, and often fish have missing or erroneous labeling at the point of sale. Never the less, don't give up on using scientific names.
Because I'm often asked about fish names, I've created a list of common fish names that includes the corresponding scientific name. You can find the list under the Related Resources section on the left of this page (you might want to bookmark it for future reference). Considering the vast number of common fish names, the list is by no means complete. However, I'll keep adding names as I come across them. If you know a common name that isn't on my list, please send me an email so I can add it.
Best of luck with your Rope Fish!
