Are Airstones Beneficial?

By April 15, 2013

Follow me on:

Airstones have been around for a long time in the aquarium industry. Their value has been up for debate, with some saying they are harmful because they alter the pH, while others saying they provide beneficial water circulation. Regardless of which camp you are in, there is little doubt that airstones will continue to be used for a long time.

My person opinion is that airstones do help move water, which is important in any aquarium. Because they can be placed virtually anywhere, airstones can be used to increase circulation in dead zones that could prove problematical. They can also make an attractive display in the tank, and many fish find them quite enjoyable. As for the claims that airstones negatively affect the pH, I've never found that to be a problem. Invariably, when pH issues are occurring there is another root cause, and airstones are only a minor player in the overall picture.
