Blackwater Treatements

Aquarium owners who wish to replicate rainforest conditions are faced with the dilemma of how to produce and maintain proper water conditions. In rainforest areas decaying vegetation releases tannins that stain the water brown and make it soft and acidic. There are two major trains of thought about Black Water aquariums. One is that only natural methods should be used, meaning driftwood, leaves, and other natural items.

The other train of thought is to use extracts to achieve the desired water parameters. This list is intended for those who wish to use extracts to replicate Black Water conditions in the aquarium. Be aware that if you use extracts, it is not a one-time application. The products will have to be used on an ongoing basis when changing or topping off the aquarium.
