Ammonia poisoning, is a major killer of aquarium fish, but its kissing cousin is nitrite poisoning. Just when you think you've weathered the storm after getting your fish through the ammonia spike, the nitrites rise and put your fish at risk again. Anytime ammonia levels are elevated, elevated nitrites will soon follow. Learn what to look out for, and how to deal with nitrite problems when they strike.

Hi Shirley,

I read your article of the “Old Tank Syndrome” and found it to be very informing, and it hit upon a painful memory I have. I too am a blogger, and an aquarium owner and to be truthful, (and I’m ashamed to admit ) but I too have had the the Old Tank Syndrome happen to my one of my tanks. I was so busy packing up and making all the plans for a move to a new home in a different state , that I completely forgot to ensure their proper water conditions. I also know that for every time a fish breathes in, it breathes out ammonia! I felt awful knowing how poor their water quality was, especially after getting their test results back . OMG! You may have thought that I was a newbie at this, but thankfully my fish were troopers and lives to tell their story of woe. It was a lesson learned for sure. Good luck with with your aquariums and your blog!

Patti, no worries, even my own brother spells my name wrong. When I asked him why he still does after all these years, he said “why should I change now?” Gotta love big brothers :)
