Public aquariums are one of my favorite places to visit, so when I read the news about the historic Belle Isle Aquarium reopening on a limited basis, I was thrilled. At the time it closed its doors in 2005, the Belle Isle Aquarium was the oldest continually operated aquarium in North America. The reopening occurred 108 years after its original opening back in 1904. Currently it is the only all volunteer run aquarium in the United States.Operated for over one hundred years by the Detroit Zoological Society, the Belle Isle Aquarium is now operated by the Belle Isle Conservancy. The future of the aquarium is tenuous, due to funding needed to keep it open. However, for now it's possible to see a little bit of aquatic history. If you are in the Detriot area, take the opportunity to see the Belle Isle while it is still open. Hours are from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on the first Sunday as well as the second and third Saturdays of each month. There currently is no admission charge.
