Are Nitrates Dangerous?

Fish owners often are educated about the perils of elevated ammonia and nitrites. However, nitrates are usually less understood. Although nitrates are not directly lethal in the way ammonia or nitrites are, over time high levels of nitrate have a negative effect on fish and plants, making the aquarium environment more hazardous than you may realize. Learn more about the significance of nitrates in the aquarium.
