Electric Blue Jack Dempsey

Tuesday June 16, 2009
Any Dempsey owners out there? Perhaps you can help this forum visitor who recently aquaried an Electric Blue Jack Dempsey.

"I just purchased an Electric Blue Jack Dempsey for my community tank. It was not a planned purchase, but when I saw how beautiful the fish was I Googled information on it and came across information that suggested it was not as an aggressive fish and saw where people had placed them in their community tanks.

I asked at my LFS, the only place I shop (have been in business since 1961) and they said it should be fine with my other fish:
  • 3 Boseman Rainbow fish
  • 6 Barbus Ticto
  • 2 red & Blue Colombians
  • 13 Golden Neons

In a 55 gallon heavily planted aquarium with a piece of driftwood and 3 large lace rocks grouped together. I did a slow temperature acclamation and than slowly poured water from my tank into the bag, took a total of about 1 and 1/2 hours. Does anyone here have any tips on keeping this fish at its optimal health, its about 3" in size currently. And is right now still getting adjusted, I just released him/her and it basically hiding in the plants, occasionally peeking out. Any information/personal experience would be appreciated.

Wow that sounds lovely. I’d love to see a pic of your 55 gallon tanks. My son is cycling his first tank and is hesitating between a Jack Dempsey or a Dwarf Gourami.

Hi there,

I have some pictures posted on the community forum under the user name “glimmermen”, in topics “plant disusiions” and pertaining to my Electric Blue Jack Dempsey under “Fish discussions”.

Everything is going well with him so far, he is a beautiful fish. A great addition to my aquarium. If you have any questions feel free to address this community forum, as I have found it to be a great resource.

hello there i also have electric blue jack dempseys in my 90 gallon tank. they are beutiful fish but i just wanted to let you know they grow fast and i know how small neon tetras are and when the dempsey gets big enough it will eat them. fish will eat anything that will fit in their mouth. The electric dempseys arent AS aggressive as the regular jack dempseys but you have to remember they are still from the cichlid family and they will be territorial and aggressive at times. i have researched a lot about fish and have a tank of my own with cichlids in them. i hope everything is going well in your tank. :)

Jack Dempseys are carnivorous and will eat smaller fish as a part of their diet, when the opportunity presents itself! They are cichlid and cannot be guaranteed to co-exist with smaller community fish. Yes there have been some, and I repeat SOME, cases that people have been able to make it possible to keep Dempseys with community fish but every fish is unique and have their own personalities.

We just started a tank a couple months ago in the tank we have a long finned Oscar, dragon golby, and the Dempsey. They all get along great! We Feds them all baby guppies, tubefx worms, freeze dried plankton and blood worms. His belly is huge and he is very active!
