"I have a question on the lifespan on a fish tank. I have a 55 gallon tank, it has been in use for about 12 years now. There is no visual damage to any of the silicone. the glass looks good and the tank is well maintained. I live on the second floor of an apartment, so it has made me think about how long they last. Any input would be much appreciated."

As far as the sealer goes here is a web site with professionals who have some answers. (below)

Most are flexible and last a long while but that said moving them if done, can stress the seals and cause leaks (just sold a small 30 gallon tank and guy held it by one edge! I said need to hold flat and evenly on frame but he wouldn’t listen.) (I was curious myself – I have a used 75 – guy forgot to mention a few crushed areas of glass near seal- and am always a bit worried myself, lol) Would have to grab the cats – fish and run if it ever blew!)

Basically as long as the sealer stays sealed you are good to go (if original silicone sealer). Check for bubbles, areas lit up (not same color so on)to foresee problems.

(I actually did a several company search to find out how long a standard well made seal should last – just says “long lasting” so then I looked for the msds (material safety data sheet) (100′ of products).. If I were you I’d just get a tube and call the number on the back – and see what they say.)

DOW (Dow chemical)
DAP or others
