Fish Types For New Tank
Thursday January 15, 2009
Stocking a new tank is a big decision. This aquarium owner is torn between what he would like, and requests from his family.Your experiences could help him out.
"I'm new to fishkeeping but am interested in keeping cichlids, clown loaches, a silver shark , a red-tailed shark and possibly some cat fish. Any suggestions on what else goes with this group of fish. I was thinking of parrot fish - but I've been put off by bad publicity concerning health issues due to not being a 'true' fish in the wild. Suggestions helpful."

Parrot fish are part of the cichlid family and cichlids are best kept in a regional species tank, e.g. Africans or South Americans but not both. With both of them it is even better if they are from the same lake or river region of their respective continents. As for the other fish on your list, they are all semi-aggressive tropical fish and will do fine together just make sure you have them in pairs at the least. Clown loaches are one of my favorites and are very social so if they are in a group of three or more they will be their happiest. A good book to read when just getting started in the hobby is, “The Simple Guide to Freshwater Aquariums” by David E. Boruchowitz.
Good Luck!
