What is This?

Saturday November 1, 2008
Sometimes you just have to say "What IS this?" Can you help this newbie identify it?

"I'm very new to all of this and need your assistance. About 2 months ago our 30 gal freshwater tank began growing this cottony pink substance on the gravel. At the time we had 2 platys and 2 skirts in the tank. We thought it was diatom and based on our research let it go thinking it would disappear. Then one of the skirts died and this cottony substance became worse, so we completely drained the aquarium, cleaned the tank, accessories filters etc... and replaced the gravel.

Now here it is 5 days later and this stuff is back! I tested the water and got the following readings:
GH - 30ppm
KH - 40ppm
Ph - 6.0
Nitrite and Nitrate both tests 0

Any suggestions?"

(1) Rick Quarton says:

Hard to say what your pink fuzzies are.
Watch your fish carefully for any signs of distress, erratic behavior and physical changes in appearance. Here’s a good place to start:

Good luck.
