Sex Changing Platies

Sunday May 13, 2007
This forum visitor has an interesting question.

"I have gathered from some other sources that platies can change sex, and would like to know more about this, as right now I inadvertently (possibly as the result of some changes?) have a not-so-good M/F ratio. Can anyone fill me in? Specifically, is this true? Under what conditions does it happen? Can it happen more than once in a fish's lifetime? Is it only one direction, or are both possible? Etc, etc. I am very curious (and hoping some of my males have a chance at changing to the females I was told they were!).

Also, has anyone ever had a very high M/F ratio of platies, and if so, how did it turn out? I know it's not supposed to be optimal, but I've been told it should be okay.... I have (at last check!) 3 males and 1 female."

I have a hybradized female platy or so I though that is 12 months old. She started out as a female and over the last 2 weeks she is growing a pointed tail and a gonopodium. I’ve never experienced this before and also would like to know has anybody witnessed this sex change before. Funny thing though, Another male sunset platy is still chasing her (er) him for the mating ritual. I don’t think he realizes anything has changed.

we just found out that our 2 male fish has a jr. in their tank now. He is about 1/4 inch size and looks perfectly fine and healthy. it’s been about 2 years since we had those 2 platties in our 3 gallons tank. we never heard or seen anything like this before so i am trying to find out if platty could really change their sex.

i bought a what i clearly saw as a female tuxedo platty me and my husband even believed her to be pregnant due to her bubble belly but as over the last 2-3 weeks of keeping an eye on her to see if she was giving signs of her getting ready to give birth i noticed her acting sketchy….i thought it was because she was ready to deliver but turns out it looks like she is turning into a male!!! i have heard that this can happen but i didnt know if it was true or not…..but since reading this i guess it is…….no tux fry for my tank damnit.
