Water Movement in Betta Tank??
Wednesday May 10, 2006
Here's a question from the forum that you might be able to help with. ?
"I've got a 5 gal desktop aquarium. after trying, in vain, to keep several fish alive i've decided that due to the fact the aquarium has no filter, it'll be almost impossible to keep the water quality high enough for most fish to survive. I'm contemplating trying a Betta. My question is this: in leu of a filter, the aquarium has a "bubbler". i've read that bettas should be kept in a space with little water movement (such as a fishbowl), does anyone know if the bubbler will create too much current for a betta?"

I have hade bettas in community tanks, some with bubblers and some without, and they have done well in both. In my experience, the labrynth-type fish can do well with frequent water changes and no filtration and mild tank mates.
I’ve had several bettas – have had all (seperately) in a five gallon tank with a filter. Every one of them lived to be at least 3 years old. (So I don’t believe there is any problem with water movement for them.)
hey! You should give it a shot–I’ve had a betta for two semesters, now, and he started in a half gallon bowl and has since moved three times (not so good for a fish, but I’m in college) into different bowls. Now I’m home and I have a 10 gallon freshwater tank set up, and he seems to be doing great in there with some other fish. I have a 10 gallon filter, and he doesnt seem to mind. try it out, a bubbler shouldnt do much more in a five gallon than a filter does in a ten!

no worries throw a betta in anything, look at it this way any department store will sell you a betta in a cup of water that hasnt been changed in months so a little bubble wont bother him! just be sure to change your water every 4 days ( that will prolong his life longevity) another thing to try is go get a “live plant” for the same tnak and hell love ya forever(well as long as he lives) and just in case your wondering ive had betta’s for years and they thrive in any condition as long as the water is cleaned every few days or so , oh and dont over feed !
We’re starting a fresh water 20 gal setup which has one of those tube bubblers that run along the bottom. We transferred our beta from the 1-2 gal jug to the tank a couple weeks ago & he seems to love it. We’ve added a few other community fish & they seem to not fuss much at all. The beta swims everywhere, up, down, into the current of the filtered water & up & down in the bubbles. People who buy those small beta ‘tanks’ don’t know what they’re missing!
bettas are good both ways however a betta does not need bubbles they go to the surface and breathe that way infact if a bubbler is to strong it can do damage to the betta. as long as the water is keep clean in my personal and professional experience they should be without movement.
